Die Storie Van Ons
Stemme Van Die WesKus
Die Doel
The purpose of the Oral History Project was the belief that young people should be equipped and given the resources to conduct an investigation into the history of their communities.
By engaging directly with elders and other community members, youth can uncover personal stories, cultural traditions, and local events that may not be recorded in textbooks.
This empowers young people to connect with their heritage, build a deeper understanding of their identity, and preserve the rich tapestry of their community’s past for future generations

1
To Preserve and Reclaim Community Memory
The Story of Us exists to safeguard the lived histories of underrepresented South African communities. By documenting intergenerational stories across West Coast Towns, the project honours elders, cultural figures, and everyday voices whose memories shape local identity.
2
To Empower Youth Through Digital Storytelling
The project equips 100 young people with practical skills in oral history, writing, photography, and digital storytelling. Through workshops and hands-on mentorship, participants become custodians of their own narratives learning not just to record stories, but to interpret, honour, and creatively share them with the world.
3
To Build Intergenerational Connection
At its heart, The Story of Us bridges generations. Youth participants engage elders, neighbours, and relatives in intimate interviews that spark dialogue, reflection, and healing.
4
To Advocate for Arts-Based Civic Engagement
Beyond documentation, the project demonstrates the transformative power of arts and heritage work in civic life. Through community exhibitions and a documentary short film, the initiative highlights the cultural richness of the West Coast while supporting future advocacy, education, and funding for similar storytelling initiatives.
